Contretype a été créée en 1978 par le photographe Jean-Louis Godefroid afin de diffuser la photographie d’auteur en fédération Wallonie-Bruxelles et à l’étranger. Jean-Louis Godefroid a été le premier à Bruxelles à promouvoir la nature artistique de la photographie. Au fil des années, d’abord dans son appartement puis à partir de 1988 dans divers lieux officiels, il organise des expositions de photographes peu connus à l’époque mais souvent devenus célèbres par la suite (Horst P. Horst, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bernard Plossu, Karl Blossfeldt, Willy Zielke, Roger Kockaerts, Gilbert Fastenaekens...). À partir de 1997, il développe un programme de résidences artistiques pour photographes belges et étranger.ère.s : Alain Paiement (Québec), Bernard Plossu (France), Elina Brotherus (Finlande), JH Engström (Suède), Philippe Herbet(Belgique)… Ce programme permet aux artistes de mener une réflexion sur leur propre travail tout en élaborant un projet photographique en lien avec le contexte particulier du territoire de Bruxelles.

En 2022 et après plusieurs années d’une gestion exercée collectivement suite au décès de Jean-Louis Godefroid, Contretype se dote d’une nouvelle direction artistique et générale. Le projet du nouveau directeur Olivier Grasser est de développer et de revendiquer Contretype comme un centre d’art pour l’image et la photographie contemporaine.

Un centre d’art est un acteur essentiel du secteur culturel, dont les missions fondamentales sont :
- L’organisation d’expositions
- La prospection, la recherche et expérimentation artistiques
- La collaboration à la réalisation de livres et d’éditions photographiques
- L’accompagnement professionnel des artistes, au plus près du développement de leurs projets
- La sensibilisation des publics et l’éducation artistique
- La participation à un maillage territorial, via une démarche collaborative avec d’autres structures culturelles de son territoire

Contretype a ainsi pour objectif de promouvoir la création photographique contemporaine et l’image numérique, dans ses espaces ou hors-les-murs, en Belgique et ailleurs. En réalisant des expositions et des résidences, en soutenant la production, la diffusion et l’édition, il accompagne le parcours professionnel de photographes-auteur.ice.s tout en construisant des liens entre artistes, publics et médias. Contretype ambitionne d’être un lieu de recherche spontanément identifié par les artistes et par les professionnel.le.s comme un interlocuteur de référence, et qui continue à se positionner comme un acteur dynamique de l’écosystème culturel, à Bruxelles et en Belgique.

En outre, Contretype, centre d’art pour l’image et la photographie contemporaine, possède une collection riche aujourd’hui d’environ 400 images. Il a donc comme missions complémentaires pour cette collection de :
- Mener un travail de gestion et d’inventaire, en particulier par la numérisation des œuvres
- Développer un programme de valorisation et de diffusion

Après avoir été installés dans l’ancien hôtel Hannon, les espaces d’exposition de Contretype sont situés depuis 2013 au 4A de la Cité Fontainas à Saint-Gilles.

Contretype was founded in 1978 by photographer Jean-Louis Godefroid to promote auteur photography in the Wallonia-Brussels federation and abroad. Jean-Louis Godefroid was the first in Brussels to promote the artistic nature of photography. Through the years, in his own home and, from 1988, in various official venues, he organised exhibitions of photographers who were little known at the time but who went on to become famous (Horst P. Horst, Robert Rauschenberg, Robert Mapplethorpe, Bernard Plossu, Karl Blossfeldt, Willy Zielke, Roger Kockaerts, Gilbert Fastenaekens, etc.). From 1997, he developed a programme of artistic residencies for Belgian and foreign photographers: Alain Paiement (Quebec), Bernard Plossu (France), Elina Brotherus (Finland), JH Engström (Sweden), Philippe Herbet (Belgium), etc. This programme gave artists the opportunity to reflect on their own work while developing a photographic project tied to the specific context of Brussels. 

In 2022, after several years of collective management following the death of Jean-Louis Godefroid, Contretype has a new artistic and managing director, Olivier Grasser.. His plan is to develop and assert Contretype as an Art Centre for Image and Contemporary Photography. 

An Art Centre is an essential player in the cultural sector, with the following fundamental missions:
- Organising exhibitions
- Prospecting, research and artistic experimentation
- Collaborating in the production of books and photographic editions
- Providing professional support for artists, in close ties to the development of personal projects 
- Raising public awareness and promoting artistic education
- Participating in a territorial network, through a collaborative approach with other cultural organisations in the area.

Contretype's aim is to promote contemporary photography and the digital image, both inside and outside its walls, in Belgium and elsewhere. By organising exhibitions and residencies, and supporting production, distribution and publishing, it supports the professional careers of photographers-authors while building ties between artists, the public and the media. Contretype's ambition is to be a research centre spontaneously identified by artists and professionals as a reference point, and to continue to position itself as a dynamic player in the cultural ecosystem in Brussels and Belgium.

In addition, Contretype, an Art Centre for Image and Contemporary Photography, currently has a collection of around 400 images. Its additional missions for this collection are to :
- Carry out management and inventory work, in particular by digitising the works
- Develop a programme to promote and disseminate the collection.

After being housed in the former Hôtel Hannon, Contretype's exhibition space has been located at 4A de la Cité Fontainas in Saint-Gilles since 2013.

Een kunstcentrum is een essentiële speler in de culturele sector, met de volgende fundamentele missies:
- Tentoonstellingen organiseren
- Prospectie, onderzoek en artistieke experimenten
- Meewerken aan de productie van boeken en fotografische uitgaven
- Professionele ondersteuning bieden aan kunstenaars, zo dicht mogelijk bij de ontwikkeling van hun projecten
- Bewustmaking van het publiek en bevordering van artistieke vorming
- Deelnemen aan een territoriaal netwerk, door middel van een gezamenlijke aanpak met andere culturele structuren in het gebied.

Contretype wil de hedendaagse fotografie en het digitale beeld promoten, zowel binnen als buiten haar muren, in België en daarbuiten. Door tentoonstellingen en residenties te organiseren en de productie, distributie en publicatie te ondersteunen, ondersteunt het de professionele carrières van fotografen-auteurs terwijl het banden opbouwt tussen kunstenaars, het publiek en de media. Contretype heeft de ambitie om een onderzoekscentrum te zijn dat spontaan door kunstenaars en professionelen als referentiepunt wordt geïdentificeerd, en om zich te blijven positioneren als een dynamische speler in het culturele ecosysteem in Brussel en België.

Daarnaast heeft Contretype, een kunstcentrum voor beeld en hedendaagse fotografie, momenteel een collectie van ongeveer 400 beelden. De aanvullende opdrachten voor deze collectie zijn :
- Beheer en inventarisatie uitvoeren, in het bijzonder door de werken te digitaliseren
- Een programma ontwikkelen om de collectie te promoten en te verspreiden.

Na onderdak te hebben gevonden in het voormalige Hôtel Hannon, is de tentoonstellingsruimte van Contretype sinds 2013 gevestigd in 4A de la Cité Fontainas in Sint-Gillis.
